Searching for Documents
You can search for a word or for a phrase within a document, or you can search through multiple documents.
Note
•
The search facility that is described here only searches for data found on the Cisco Product Documentation DVD.
•
Only the index pages are indexed for search. Use the search feature to identify high-level documents. The search function does not highlight specific words, but only locates the document.
When you click Search, the search engine scans the data and generates a weighted list of documents that includes the words or phrases that you provide. The weight is a score of how close the engine thinks that the document fits your request, and is based on a large number of factors that include the following:
•
The number of times the words or phrases appeared in the document
•
If the word or phrase appears in the title of the document
•
How close the words or phrases are to each other within the document

Tips on Searching for Documents
•
When you enter queries in a mixed case, the search engine finds case-sensitive matches.
–
When you enter queries that are all in upper case, the search engine only finds upper-case matches.
–
When you enter queries that are all in lower case, the search engine queries all versions (mixed, upper, and lower case).
•
The simplest search string is a single words consisting of alphanumeric characters. Use a space for any special characters. For example, if you want to search for information about IP/VC, enter: IP VC.
•
Enclose an exact string of word in quotation marks. For example, if you only what to see 12000 router installation, enter 12000 router installation.
•
You can search for a single word, or you can search for a group of words. Groups of words work like an AND function in the search engine. For example, if you enter 12000 router installation, the search engine finds documents that contain: 12000, router, and installation.
Boolean Commands
The search engine accepts boolean commands, such as AND and OR:
•
For example, when you enter 2500 and 2600, the search engine searches for documents containing both 2500 and 2600, but not necessarily together in the same phrase.
•
For example, when you enter 2500 or 2600, the search engine searches for documents containing either 2500 or 2600.
Stemming
The search engine can also interpret stemming, which is defined by using an asterisk (*) that acts like a wildcard.
•
For example, when you enter ons 155*, the search engine searches for words beginning with ons 155, such as ons 15501, ons 15530, and ons 15540.
•
To narrow your search, you can use stemming with other words and phrases; for example: ons 155* ios release 12.2
•
Plural forms of words are automatically included in your search; for example, when you enter router, the search engine finds both router and routers.
